Australia sets the number of students allowed to enroll in universities

 Australia has implemented a new quota system on the number of students that large universities can enroll. According to this, 15 universities will be allowed to take fewer students than last year.

Education Minister Jason Clare has stated that quotas have been set to deal with the management of higher education as well as employment and housing issues. Clare had already announced that he would limit the number of international students to 270,000 for next year.

Accordingly, the government has set the number of international students that every university can take admission in 2025. Educational institutions, including universities, have been expressing their displeasure with Education Minister Clare's decision.

It is seen that the quota system will have a direct impact on international students including Nepali students. Some of the universities which are preferred by Nepali students are also among the universities with less number of students. According to some universities, the number of students has been significantly lost compared to the number of admissions in the previous years, while some have gained more.

Experts have expressed concern saying that with the imposition of a quota on the number of students coming to study in Australia, the educational institutions here will suffer financial loss and a large number of jobs will be lost.

The Australian National University (ANU), one of the best in the world, has lost about 15 percent of its student population. Similarly, the University of New South Wales has lost 14 percent of its student population. It is said that the University of New South Wales will be able to admit 9,500 students while next year, it will be able to enroll a total of 3,400 students.

The University of Sydney will be able to enroll the most 11,900 students out of the allocated quota. This is 7 percent less than last year's enrollment of the university. Similarly, University of New England and University of Notre Dame have got the lowest number of students at the rate of 700 among the allotted quota.

Federation University Australia will be able to enroll 1100 students. This is about 52 percent less than last year's enrollment. The number of students is 34 percent less than last year. This university has a total of 3,500 students.

Some universities have even received more students than last year in the quota given by the government. Charles Stuart University has received the highest number of 162 students last year and has received 1000 quota for 2025. University of Sunshine Coast, University of Tasmania, University of Notre Dame, University of Adelaide, Southern Cross University, Flinders University and others have increased compared to last year.
